Our Unit was formed in February 2002. We are located 30 miles northwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We currently meet at the Coon Rapids VFW Post 9625 which is located at 1919 Coon Rapids Blvd, Coon Rapids MN. Our meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. We do not meet the months of July or December. We are always looking for new senior and junior members to join our ranks. Our unit services Anoka, Isanti and Sherburne counties.
Our Unit has many different types of fundraisers we do to raise money to help our veterans. One of our biggest fundraisers is the department clothing program. This fundraiser consists of our unit collecting clothes in our green DAV bins and hauling them into Savers. We are one out of the three units which participate in this program. Other fundraisers that we have are, a casino bus trip twice a year, an annual bake sale, and Barnes & Noble Christmas gift wrapping. We also assist our chapter with some of their fundraising thing like bagging groceries and the annual Forget-Me-Not drive.
Our Unit has an Adopt-A-Veteran program in which we currently have 7 nursing homes with close to 100 veterans in total. We buy holiday gifts for these veterans and send them birthday and holiday cards throughout the year. Another program is our pillowcases for the hospices patients at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. We help support the Anoka County Veterans food shelf as needed and financially support recreational programs for disabled veterans like the deer and turkey hunts held at Camp Ripley. Our unit also helps the five state veteran’s homes financially with their outdoor programs and many other veterans throughout the year with food and gas gift cards.
In 2017 Anoka County got a veterans transition home called the Eagles Healing Nest which our unit helped financially with the remodeling of the facilities and clothing for the veterans. There will be a total of three building when it is all done; one building for men, one for women, and one for families.
Our mission to help all veterans.
